Last years achievements
British Food Fortnight was held for the first time in Autumn 2002. Organised by the Countryside Alliance and the Guild of Fine Food Retailers, it was the first national celebration of our nation''s regional produce and proved a tremendous success.
Over 500 retailers across the country ran special promotions - many of them based on stocking new regional products in addition to their normal range; approximately 550 restaurants offered special British-food based menus; and events were held across the country with regional food fortnights such as North East Food Fortnight and county celebrations such as Dorset Food Week. Coverage in national and regional press, radio & TV reached over 15 million people. And the response from Ministers, MPs and Peers was very favourable. Lord Whitty launched the fortnight, the Minister for Rural Affairs was actively involved and over 80 MPs attended receptions in Westminster & the Welsh Assembly to hear about the role of the Fortnight in promoting British food.
A promotion run by The Guild of Fine Food Retailers, who encouraged their members to stock predominantly British regional food and drink during the fortnight, proved that British Food Fortnight increased the availability of regional speciality foods and made a serious impact on sales. 97% of the retailers taking part increased their sales of British food and drink by in excess of 14% as a direct result of the fortnight and 80% of new lines of food and drink stocked for the promotion have been retained since.
A large coalition of organisations, all of whom shared the objectives of promoting Britain''s regional food, supported the event and helped promote it. The fortnight provided a window for them to focus their food promotion activities thus maximising their overall impact. Those who took part were:
British Hospitality Association, British Beer & Pub Association, Campaign for Real Food, Churches Together in England, the Countryside Alliance, Farmers Union of Wales, Fishmongers'' Company, Food from Britain, Food Lovers'' Fairs, National Game Dealers Association, Outdoor Industries Association, NFU, NFU (Cymru), Ramblers Association, Small Abbatoir Association, Specialist Cheesemakers'' Association, The Guild of Q Butchers, The Potato Council, The Soil Association, Welsh Lamb & Beef Promotions, Women''s Food & Farming Union. In addition, the Steering Committee for the ''Your Countryside You''re Welcome'' campaign - which comprised DEFRA, the Countryside Agency, Department for Culture, Media & Sport and the English Tourism Council - adopted British Food Fortnight as their autumn promotion.
